What is the Public Records Act 2005 Audit Programme?

Archives New Zealand has implemented a programme to audit the recordkeeping of public offices in 2010 to meet its obligations under section 33 of the Public Records Act 2005 (PRA).

The Public Records Act requires the Chief Archivist to:

• commission and pay for independent audits of recordkeeping practices in public offices;
• commission and pay for an independent audit of the recordkeeping practices of the Chief Archivist;
• conduct audits in 5 to 10 year cycles, i.e. each public office will be audited once every 5-10 years; and
• report the results of the audits to the Minister of Internal Affairs and Parliament.

Application

All public offices, except schools, are currently audited as a part of this programme.
Local Authorities are not audited as a part of this programme.
